Why do dogs get stuck together when breeding

Have you witnessed dogs mating? These animals are not very particular where they will do the sexual act. Dogs are seen copulating on the beach, on the street, in the park and in many other places. A female dog in heat has a distinct smell that announces her availability.

This is the reason why a bitch in heat will be surrounded by male dogs. A bitch that allows her vulva to be sniffed and licked by a male dog is a cue that she is ready to be mated. The bitch will show her willingness to be mated to the favored male dog. The bitch in heat will manifest a flagging behavior or the holding of the tail to one side to show that she is ready to be mated. Unlike male dogs that are always eager to copulate, female dogs are kind of choosy. Bitches will only be receptive when they are in the estrus stage of the reproductive cycle.

If the bitch is ready to be bred she will allow the male to mount her from behind. The bitch will give the male easy entry by holding the tail to one side. The male will mount and penetrate the vulva with the penis. Human’s penis have to be erect to achieve penetration. This is not so with dogs as even if the penis is not stiff it can penetrate the bitch’s vulva. This is because a dog’s penis has a small bone called baculum that makes the penis rigid. After penetration, blood will surge to the erectile tissues at the base of the penis. Due to the swelling of these bulbus glandis tissues the penis will be trapped inside the vagina . This would result to the mating tie.

The male dog will swing the legs over the other so that they will be facing opposite directions while staying connected at the rear ends. The mating tie is one of nature’s incredible designs that ensures that the bitch will be impregnated. The dogs will stay connected for about 30 minutes and will only be separated after the male has fully ejaculated the sperms and the prostatic fluids. Being stuck together guarantees that the sperm will be transferred inside the vagina. The distinct smell a bitch in heat emits encourages other dogs to try their luck.

The mating tie guarantees that dominant dogs cannot interrupt the mating.
